There are many people who are always surprised at BTS’ great achievements on the Billboard charts. But BTS has been topping the charts early on in their debut since 2017 and as the years went on, they climbed higher and higher on the charts until now where their latest album “BE” has joined the chart breaking streak. Having sold over 20 million albums on the Gaon Music Chart, BTS is the best-selling artist in South Korean history and holds the best-selling album in South Korea with Map of the Soul: 7. They are the first and only Asian and non-English speaking act to be named the IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year (2020) and they currently remain as the only non-English speaking act to enter that list.

This GRAMMY week, before, during and after has been both a but disappointing but also a great one as BTS have received various accolades and beaten records with jaw dropping numbers.  BTS’ entire discography has reentered US iTunes, the rap line’s mixtapes also entered the charts, solo songs have been rising in sales and streaming numbers. This week Billboard announced the Top 5 World Albums and BTS took 4 spots, number 1 to 3, then number 5. The albums that topped the charts were “BE,” “Map Of The Soul:7,”Love Yourself: Tear,” and “Love Yourself: Her”

Lets have a look at why these 4 albums are on top of the charts.

“BE” is BTS’ fifth Korean-language (ninth overall) released on November 20, 2020. “BE” was supported by the lead single “Life Goes On” which debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming BTS’ third consecutive number-one song in the United States. With this, BTS became the fastest group in over 42 years to earn three number-one songs in a span of three months, since the Bee Gees.

The album was BTS’ fifth to debut at number one on the Billboard 200, making BTS the fastest group to earn five chart-topping albums in the United States since the Beatles. BTS also became the only act besides Taylor Swift to debut atop the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard 200 charts simultaneously.

Seven tracks from the album charted simultaneously on the Hot 100 chart, with #1 Life Goes On,” #3 “Dynamite,” #13 “Blue & Grey,” #22 “Stay,” #69 “Fly to My Room,” #70 “Telepathy,” and #72 “Dis-ease” “BE” was the fifth best-selling physical album of the year in the US, with 252,000 hard copies sold

Map of the Soul: 7” is BTS’ fourth Korean-language (seventh overall) studio album released on February 21, 2020. “Map of the Soul: 7” debuted at number-one on the Billboard 200 chart with 422,000 album-equivalent units (including 347,000 sales) earned in its first week. With this, BTS became the first Asian group to top the charts in all of the top-five music markets in the world.

In under nine days of its release, the album sold more than 4.1 million copies for the first time in Gaon Album Chart’s history, setting the Guinness World Record for the best-selling album in South Korea and was certified quadruple million by the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA).

It was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). At the end of 2020, Billboard revealed that “Map of the Soul: 7” ranked at number two on the list of the ten top-selling albums of the year in the US, according to MRC Data, with 674,009 copies sold

As of February 2021, “Map of the Soul: 7” has remained on the US Billboard 200 chart for 52 consecutive weeks, making it the first BTS album to spend its entire first year on the chart, and the second longest charting Asian album after Love Yourself: Answer.

In March 2021, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry named “Map of the Soul: 7” as the bestselling album of 2020 globally, both in pure sales and across all consumption formats, spanning physical sales, digital downloads, and streaming platforms. The album received the IFPI’s first ever Global Album All Format Chart Award

Love Yourself: Tear” (LOVE YOURSELF 轉 ‘Tear’) is BTS’ third Korean studio album (sixth overall) released on May 18, 2018. On May 27, 2018, the album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, earning 135,000 album-equivalent units becoming BTS’ highest-charting album in a Western market at the time, as well as the first Korean album to top the US albums chart and the highest-charting album by an Asian act.

In South Korea, “Love Yourself: Tear” sold 1,664,041 copies in its first two weeks, making it the highest monthly sales for an album since the Gaon Chart’s inception. These sales also caused BTS to become the first K-pop artist to surpass one-million copies in its first week on the Hanteo chart since its inception in 1993, making them true “double million sellers” (pure, without repackage).

The album was eventually certified “Million” by the Korea Music Content Association in July 2018, becoming the first album to receive this after the Gaon Music Chart launched certifications earlier that year.

On May 27, 2018, the album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, earning 135,000 album-equivalent units (including 100,000 pure album sales), becoming BTS’ highest-charting album in the US, as well as the first K-pop album to top the US albums chart, and the highest-charting album by an Asian act.

It is also the highest sales week for both BTS and a Korean act in the United States, and the first album primarily in a non-English language to top the Billboard 200 since Il Divo with Ancora in 2006. The album has sold over 100,000 copies since its Japanese release, becoming the first of BTS’ Korean-language discography to be certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of Japan in August 2018

“Love Yourself: Her” (LOVE YOURSELF 承 ‘Her’) is BTS’ fifth extended play (EP) released on September 18, 2017. “Love Yourself: Her” debuted at number one in Korea on the Gaon Album Chart, while “DNA” debuted at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart, with all tracks from the EP also placing in the top 40 of the chart.

The EP opened at number seven on the US Billboard 200, making it the highest-charting K-pop album on the chart and biggest sales week of a K-pop album until the release of BTS’ own Love Yourself: Tear in 2018.

It achieved 31,000 album-equivalent units, of which 18,000 were in pure album sales. This made BTS the first Asian artist in seven years to debut within the top ten of the chart. According to the monthly Gaon Album Chart released on October 14, “Love Yourself: Her” was the highest-selling release of September 2017, with 1,203,533 copies sold since its release on September 18.

The album also had the second highest monthly sales in the history of the Gaon Chart, and was the first in 16 years to exceed 1.2 million copies sold. “Love Yourself: Her” became BTS’ highest-selling album at the time, overtaking their 2016 album Wings, as well as becoming one of the bestselling albums in the history of the Gaon Chart with over 2.2 million copies sold as of April 2020. The album remained on the Billboard 200 for 44 weeks, the first Korean album to do so
