BTS’ “Map of the Soul: 7” album is the first-ever winner of IFPI’s newly-launched Global Album All Format Chart after a countdown of the top ten biggest albums globally. The Grammy nominees’ latest album “BE (Deluxe Edition)” took the fourth position on the charts. BTS was the only act with multiple albums in the top ten with “Map of the Soul: 7” taking #1 and “BE” as #4 best selling album of 2020 globally. IFPI represents the recorded music industry worldwide. The chart celebrates the best-selling albums of the year across all consumption formats, spanning physical sales, digital downloads, and streaming platforms together with IFPI’s existing global awards.
The Top 10 global albums are; BTS’ “Map Of The Soul: 7” album, The Weeknd “After Hours” album, Billie Eilish “WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?” album, BTS “BE (Deluxe Edition)” album, Harry Styles “Fine Line” album, Post Malone “Hollywood’s Bleeding” album, Kenshi Yonezu “STRAY SHEEP” album, Justin Bieber “Changes” album, Taylor Swift “folklore” album and Dua Lipa’s “Future Nostalgia” album, no 1-10 respectively.

BTS “Map of the Soul: 7” was a huge commercial success. The album reached number one on charts in over 20 countries. “Map of the Soul: 7” debuted at number-one on the Billboard 200 chart with 422,000 album-equivalent units (including 347,000 sales) earned in its first week.
In under nine days of its release, the album sold more than 4.1 million copies for the first time in Gaon Album Chart’s history, setting the Guinness World Record for the best-selling album in South Korea and was certified quadruple million by the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA).
The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) which denotes one million album-equivalent units and Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ), and earned gold certifications in several countries.
Following the release of “Map of the Soul: 7”, BTS became the best-selling artist in South Korea of all time, having sold 20.32 million albums cumulatively. Map of the Soul: 7 was also the number one physical album of the year in America, with 646,000 hard copies sold.
As of February 2021, “Map of the Soul: 7” has remained on the US Billboard 200 chart for 52 consecutive weeks, making it the first BTS album to spend its entire first year on the chart
BTS “BE” album debuted atop the US Billboard 200 with 242,000 album-equivalent units, including 177,000 sales, becoming BTS’s fifth number-one album in the United States. As a result, BTS became the fastest group to earn five number-one albums since the Beatles between 1966 and 1968.
BTS became the first group and ninth overall act to prevail on top of the Artist 100, Hot 100, and Billboard 200 charts simultaneously. With “BE” Seven tracks from the album charted simultaneously on the Hot 100 chart, with “Life Goes On” and “Dynamite” in the top-10, “Blue & Grey” in the top-20, and “Stay” in the top-40. This stood as the most number of simultaneous entries on the Hot 100 chart by a Korean act.
“BE” debuted at number one on South Korea’s Gaon Album Chart with first week sales of 2.274 million copies on Hanteo Chart, representing the second-highest first sales figures in the chart’s history, behind “Map of the Soul: 7”. With it, “BE” became BTS’ eighth consecutive million seller in the country.
The album received double million certification from the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA) on January 6, 202. At the end of 2020, according to MRC Data, “BE” was the fifth best-selling physical album of the year in the US, with 252,000 hard copies sold.
Following the release of the Essential Edition in February 2021, “BE” returned to the top 10 of the Billboard 200 at number seven on the chart issue dated March 6, with an additional 36,000 equivalent album units sold. Of this number, 28,000 copies were pure sales, giving the album a third non-consecutive week at number one on the Top Album Sales chart.
