BTS Are Winners Of The IFPI Global Recording Artist Of The Year 2020

BTS is a gift that keeps on giving and as a result they have become a gift that also keeps on receiving. Their message has always been simple, love yourself, and that is why they have resonated with so many people around the world, across cultures, age, country, demographics, gender and even color. The lyrics in their music speak volumes about current situations which most people relate to.

Despite 2020 being a very dark year, BTS managed to bring the music desired and a breath of somewhat relief from the negative occurrences around the world. They chose to share their own struggles during the pandemic letting the world know that they are not alone as they sought to find out how they can offer a sense of relief to people on a personal level albeit so far away.

As a result of doing what they love and know best, BTS have been named the winners of the IFPI Global Artist Chart 2020! They were up against artists like Taylor Swift, Drake, The Weeknd, Billie Eeilish, Eminem, Post Malone, Ariana Grande, Juice World and Justine Beiber who are all global artists.

The unique award is calculated according to an artist’s or group’s worldwide performance across digital and physical music formats during the year, from streams to vinyl, and covers their entire body of work. The award was announced at the culmination of the IFPI Global Artist Chart, which counted down the top 10 best-selling artists of the year globally” _IFPI

BTS have been steadily rising on the charts since they first landed on it in 2018 at no. 2, in 2019 they managed to get the no. 7 spot and in 2020 they topped the chart for the first time.

BTS, Ariana Grande, Post Malone & Drake are the only artists to ranks in the top 10 IFPI Global Artist Chart for the last three consecutive years.

BTS released 3 new albums in 2020 that quickly became the mark of what successful albums should be. The albums Map Of The Soul: 7,  Map Of The Soul 7 The Journey and “BE” released in succession broke many records, BTS’ own records and other music legends’ records.

With the “Map of the Soul: 7” Album, BTS became the first Asian group to top the album charts in the top five music markets in the world—the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, and France after selling over 4 million copies worldwide.

“BE” Album debuted atop the US Billboard 200 with 242,000 album-equivalent units, including 177,000 sales, becoming BTS’s fifth number-one album in the United States.

Not only were BTS’ albums successful, the singles also held their own in terms of achieving success as soon as they were released.

“Dynamite” debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming the band’s first number-one single in the United States and making BTS the first all-South Korean act to top the Hot 100.

“Life Goes On” debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming the band’s third number-one single in the United States. As a result, the group achieved the fastest accumulation of three number-one songs since the Bee Gees between 1977-78.

Not only in just music, BTS were honored for their contributions to music and their influences both as individuals and as a group. Last year 2020 they were named TIME ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR, and BAND OF THE YEAR, they received the WSJ MUSIC INNOVATORS award, the ASIA GAME CHANGER AWARD and the JAMES A. VAN FLEET AWARD.

BTS have held the biggest online concerts of 2020, Bang Bang Con The Live which had the highest number of viewers for an online concert and then came Map Of The Soul ON:E virtual concert which beat the previous one to have over 900,000 paid viewers.

BTS have been nominated for the 62nd Grammy Awards set to take place on 14th March 2021. They are the first ever Korean Artist to be nominated to the prestigious Awards for category of “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance” for their hit single Dynamite.

It is true BTS have had an outstanding year that was 2020, and if we know Jin, Suga, RM, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook, 2021 is set to be another year of their hard work and dedication and love for their fans.
